1.About the meeting and host
ACS annual meetings organized by
the American Chemical Society twice a year (spring and fall) and about 12,000
chemical professionals attend each of these national meetings. The 245th
ACS National Meeting & Exposition was organized by American Chemical
Society (ACS) which is a scientific society based in the United
States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. ACS
currently has more than 164,000 members at all degree-levels and in all fields
of chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields. It is the world's
largest scientific society and one of the leading sources of authoritative
scientific information.
It also has a great scientific
contribution to all the new inventions of the world. The publications division
of the American Chemical Society provides the worldwide scientific community
with a comprehensive collection of the most-cited, peer-reviewed journals in
the chemical and related sciences.
ACS Publications publishes more
than 40 journals, Chemical and Engineering News, ACS Legacy Archives and the
ACS symposium series via its award-winning web-based platform. ACS journals are
#1 in citations or Impact Factor in the seven chemistry categories as well as
nine additional categories.
2. Official program
2.1 Sunday, April 7
The theme of the meeting was ‘chemistry
of energy and food’ the
meeting officially began with a plenary session by professors: Peter Schieberle
(Technical University of Munich), Walter G. Rakitsky (Solazyme, Inc.) John
Floros (Kansas State University), Cesar Vega (Mars Botanical). All presenters delivered
excellent presentations in the field of food chemistry, future of food
technologies and new sources of renewable oils for energy and food system.
2.2 Monday, April 8
Oral session started at 08:00 am,
on enantioselective catalysis and through the whole day different professors
and researchers give oral presentations on recent advances in heterocyclic and
aromatics chemistry, development of new reactions methodologies, organic
synthesis, green chemistry, and metal mediated reactions. In the evening from
07:00–10:00 pm poster presentation started focusing on organic chemistry and
medicinal chemistry.
2.3 Tuesday, April 9
Morning session started (08:00
am) with metal mediated reaction and I was the first presenter in this session.
I presented our recent study under the title “Efficient approach for the synthesis of γ-benzopyranones as natural
product intermediates utilizing Sonogashira coupling and 18-crown-6 ether
mediated cyclization”

During this presentation I
interacted with the audience by answering their questions and commenting on
their remarks. After finishing my presentation, I attended the several presentations
on biologically related molecules and process, asymmetric reactions and
synthesis, total synthesis of complex molecules.
In the afternoon I got an invitation
for lunch with the editors of ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters where I
shared my ideas with professors: Dennis
C. Liotta, Maurizio Botta, Bruce E. Maryanoff and Peter Wipf. This lunch was a great
experience for me, because the editors discussed with us how to write an ideal
manuscript, select most suitable reviewers, reviewing procedures and the
expected time period for publications. I will be sharing all these ideas with
our group members in the Graduate Institute of Natural Products, Kaohsiung
Medical University, Kaohsiung, in the next group meeting aiming to transfer
such updated information to all new researchers in our group.
In the evening from 08:00-10:00
pm, I joined the poster session in which different posters in field of organic
chemistry were presented.
2.4 Wednesday, April 10
I attended several presentations
on peptides, proteins and amino acids chemistry, recent advances in chemical
methodology and library development strategies.
Also I joined the poster sessions
in the evening from 08:00-10:00 pm which was focused on recent advances in
organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.
2.5 Thursday, April 11
I attended poster session on
industrial and engineering chemistry and this was the last session of 245th
ACS National Meeting & Exposition.
3. Participant’s experience
I am fortunate to have this great
opportunity to the world-renowned city of New Orleans to participate in such a
prestigious international meeting. New Orleans, with its richly mottled old buildings,
its sly, sophisticated - sometimes almost disreputable - air, and its
Hispanic-Gallic traditions, has more the flavor of an old European capital than
an American city such as a French Quarter. The venue is quite special, Morial Convention Center with all
facilities, stylish and luxury.
In this five-day meeting I
attended many world class presentations and I learned lot of things from these
presentations such as how people present their ideas, presentation styles and different
presentation techniques. Also I participated several times in the questions and
answers sessions, where I learned how to develop new creative ideas and how people are using new techniques for
their research.
Moreover, I got new ideas from
different research areas like organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry,
enantioselective catalysis, new reactions and methodology, green chemistry and
metal mediated reactions which will lead to new projects and prestigious
publications.
4. Summary and future perspectives
Through attending the 245th
ACS annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, I come to know the atmosphere
of the international conferences, meetings and seminars. These meetings
represent an excellent opportunity to expand researcher horizon where he or she
can see the latest and the most advanced ideas, research, concepts and
techniques which will be useful for his or her study.
Due to this meeting, I got the chance to represent
our school globally, to discover new research and publish our work, learn
new technologies which will help me to advance
my career. I also shared ideas,
knowledge and interact with famous professors and researchers in my research
area from all over the world. This will definitely help in future for
collaboration of Kaohsiung Medical University and other schools from different
parts of the world.
5. Acknowledgments
I would like to express my
sincere thanks for the National Science Council (NSC) of Taiwan and Center for
International Affairs, Kaohsiung Medical University for the financial support
and giving me the opportunity to attend the 245th American Chemical
Society (ACS) National Meeting, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA (7-11, April 2013).
I am also thankful for professors
Fang-Rong Chang and Jeh-Jeng Wang for their
continuous support and inspiration to attend this meeting. I
would like also to thank my colleagues for their kind help and guidance to
prepare the NSC grant application as well as for their valuable suggestions and
comments during the preparation of my presentation.
