My experience in participating
in International Conference
From 7th to 10th
of June I had a chance to participate in an International Conference which took
place at the International Convention and Exhibition centre, Suntec city,
Singapore. It was Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver
(APASL)’s conference with the subject “Transforming Science to Clinical
Practice”. There were hundreds of participants from all over the world to share
with each other their knowledge, experience and new findings, and to learn more
about liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis B and C and their common
complications like hepatic cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinomas.
On the day 7th of
June I had successfully presented two posters
titled “Hepatitis C virus infection further decreases serum cholesterol
level and platelet count in patients with chronic hepatitis B” and “Chronic
hepatitis B is associated with lower serum uric acid levels: A community-based
study”.
During the conference days I
have attended numerous lectures and presentations of outstanding medical
doctors from different countries. In general, the presentations were about the
advanced chronic liver diseases, their classification, pathogenesis,
prognostics and new pathways in diagnostics and treatment. One of the most
interesting presentations was the presentation of Dr. Wong F. from Toronto,
Canada titled “New concepts in classification of clinical cirrhosis”. The key
points of his lecture were that the classification of cirrhosis is evolving as
the understanding of the pathophysiology of cirrhosis is improving and better diagnostic
and treatment options are becoming available. The staging of cirrhosis as
compensated and decompensated is becoming too simple. Moreover, the Child-Pugh
classification does not really separate out the various grades of severely ill
cirrhotic patients. For this reason the MELD score is getting over the
Child-Pugh classification, especially for the allocation of donor organs.
Ultimately, the author mentioned that the availability of new tools such as
HVPG (hepatic venous pressure gradient) and liver stiffness measurements will
improve prognosis prediction.
Another lecture which called my
attention was by Dr. Wanless I.R. from Halifax, Toronto titled “New concepts in
pathogenesis and regression of cirrhosis”. The important part of the lecture
was that cirrhosis could regress on cessation of chronic hepatitis due to the
processes such as decrease in-out-imbalance, regeneration and fibrosis
resorption. However, it regresses but does not reverse into normal.
I’ve gained an enormous
experience participating in this conference. Have acquired new understandings
and widen my knowledge. Have communicated with the colleagues from all over the
world and shared our experiences.
Besides the tight conference
schedule, I could enjoy Singapore. It is very clean, tidy and busy place. The
weather was very similar to Kaohsiung’s weather. I have visited the Merlion
Park, the famous sightseeing spot with the Merlion statue which is the symbol
of Singapore and the well-known tourist icon. Had an opportunity to view the laser
show at Marina Bay Sands hotel.
In overall, I have enjoyed my
trip to Singapore, since I have successfully presented two posters of mine,
have learned a lot from the lectures and made a small sightseeing tour through
Singapore. So I would like to express my sincere gratitude to KMU for making
this trip possible.
