研習名稱:61屆美國質譜學會國際學術研討會
研習類型:國際會議(發表論文)

一、參加會議經過

The annual conference held by the American Society of Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) this year was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where at least 7,000 scientists, academicians, doctors, corporate employees, and graduate students from around the world attended the five-day conference to present their research in mass spectrometry. At least 2800 poster and 280 oral presentations were hosted after a careful selection process, with plenary lectures from distinguished academicians such as Dr. Michael Gross and Dr. Peter Onyisi. Poster and oral presentations were categorized over the course of the conference, with topics ranging from inorganic mass spectrometric analysis of trace elements in geological samples to organic and biological mass spectrometric analysis of protein and lipid biomarkers in clinical samples. Vendors from large scientific companies such as Bruker Daltonics, Shimadzu Corporation, AB Sciex, Perkin Elmer, Leco, Waters, Thermo, and Agilent Technologies had booths where they each introduced state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry- related technologies. Various workshops and hospitality suites were held during the week (from Monday to Wednesday) in order for more discussion on specific mass spectrometry topics and the showcasing of new scientific products from companies, respectively. There were about 400 presentations from scientists in Asia, of which 54 presentations were from Taiwan; Taiwanese scientists hailed from universities such as National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, Academia Sinica, National Cheng-Kung University, National Sun Yat-Sen University, and Kaohsiung Medical University.

二、與會心得

This ASMS conference was the first international conference I attended, in which I gave my first formal scientific oral presentation to more than 300 people, including professors, medical doctors, corporate employees, and graduate students. My presentation, which discussed the use of a mobile mass spectrometric system for the rapid detection of plasticizers and pesticides in various samples, was the only oral presentation that was given by a scientist from Taiwan, and for that I am very grateful that my abstract was accepted as an oral presentation because of the competitiveness of the selection process, in which many high-quality talks and posters were presented. I found the posters and presentations very interesting because of the thought and effort put into the research by many top scientists around the world. However, since the ASMS conferences are the biggest mass spectrometry conferences in the world, there were many presentations and posters which I did not well understand because of their different research interests; this made me realize that I need to learn more about mass spectrometry, and to further strive for excellence in order to be able to present a poster or a talk during the conference next year.

三、建議

Although the ASMS conference is held in the U.S.A., it is also for scientists who want to present their findings to an audience of fellow researchers from around the world, especially since the conference is also the largest mass spectrometry conference in the world, with over 7000 members in attendance. Professors, doctors, and graduate students are encouraged to present their findings at the ASMS conference; although the financial costs are relatively high because of the conference location in the U.S.A., the prestige and honor associated with the ASMS conference means such costs are generally well worth it. Attendees can also meet with corporate employees to discuss purchases of new mass spectrometric technologies, or meet with each other in discussion forums on topics of similar interest. In short, more Taiwanese involvement in the ASMS conference, specifically those from KMU, will help bolster the standing of KMU and Taiwan to scientists around the world.

五、其他

I would like to thank Kaohsiung Medical University for any financial assistance in advance, as well as my advisor Prof. Yeou-Lih Huang for his support. I would also like to thank Dr. Min-Zong Huang and Chih-Chiang Chou, with whom we collaborated for this presentation and its related research work, as well as the students and researchers at National Sun Yat-Sen University.
