Since Year 1 in KMU, going to Harvard as an exchange student in year 5-6 was my dream. My friend and I attended the gathering for seniors that have been to Harvard and are giving speeches on their experiences during the exchange in Harvard. It sounded like a great chance to see one of the most prestigious medical school in the states. To see what is out there and learn from the best of the best. As a young and motivated student, that was my only goal. That was the source of my motivation since year 1. On 2008 April, my dream came true. I am
going to Harvard, I went to Harvard. Be prepared, socialize, work with the team, stay curious, be active, have fun and enjoy every moment are some key points to which I think are very important to optimize our learning experience at our exchange in Harvard medical school.
Staying curious is one of the most essential things to the exchange program. Always ask questions if there are any, it is the only way to learn. Most of the times we will find that they do things differently, and it is best we know why they do what they do. We should also observe as much as we can and always try to help when we can. In plastic and reconstructive surgery department, there is a very big variety of surgeries to see. I try to see new surgeries everyday so I could learn from all of them. In a big hospital like Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) they have a wider variety of surgery than in our school, therefore some surgeries we might only be able to see in our exchange.
Be active. In a surgical rotation in MGH it is always helpful to be active. If you let people know that you are interested to help, it is more likely they will involve you in the surgery. At first the students get to scrub in and observe the surgery close up. But after being familiar with the operation room and the staff more responsibilities will be put upon the student. After the first few days I was able to scrub in all the surgeries to assist, from cutting stitches, retraction to stitching, cauterizing, incising and dressing the wound post operatively. I have learnt a lot of surgical techniques in MGH because of their culture. When the professors think you are ready to take one responsibility, they will trust you to help and you will be supervised at all times.
Last but not least, we should always try to have fun and make the best out of our experience. The operation room is a very stressful environment, but the people are all very friendly and fun to interact with. Having fun will definitely optimize our learning and help us remember the things we learn better. After hours, it always helps to explore the city a bit. Boston is a very beautiful place with a very different culture from Taiwan.
Overall it was a great experience to go to MGH for a month. I have not only learnt a lot from the program but also made many valuable friends and grown to be more independent. It wasn’t only an academic trip but also very fun. It was definitely worth all the trouble with the applications, US visas, and preparation.
