藥博一年級柯麥可世界模擬聯合國會議心得感想
研習時間:2011/03/14~2011/03/18
研習地點:新加坡國立大學(SNUS)
活動名稱:World Model United Nation(WMUN)
研習類別:參加國際社團大學
Model United Nations (MUN) is a student club which aims to give the students all around the world opportunity to experience the feeling of being there, being part of United Nation (UN) meeting. MUN is designed not only to simulate the UN meeting itself but also encourages everyone, who has a will to get involved, to learn about the global issues, including security, health, economy, and human rights.
I joined the club in October 2010 (my second year at KMU). One of the reasons why to join was language, because only English is officially used in UN, right! So I can encourage myself to improve my professional English skills. The other and the most important premise of joining KMUN was my interest in politics, global view and world issues not only from medical point of view. Therefore, joining the club and following its activities is a great chance to improve one`s knowledge.
During that short time, I attended special lecture on Negotiation, joined the study group discussing and teaching us how to get the ‘Global point of view’. I also took part in Island MUN in Taipei, where we tried to get consensus on Human trafficking problem (I was representing Egypt there). However the peak and the goal of all of these preparative activities was attendance of World Model United Nations, that is held once a year gathering together thousands of students from all around the world and covering all committees of UN and different kinds of topics.
This year it took place in Singapore, in Asian modern ‘capital’. The program was fulfilled with ‘Sessions’ = meetings taking 5 days. The entire discussion is composed of general debate, moderated or un-moderated caucuses.
The steps towards final agreement on a certain topic:
Choosing the topic for the debate (1 out of 2)
Working paper preparation
negotiations on getting important ideas into Draft Resolution
implementing Amendments into endorsed Draft
and finally - looking for a consensus among all delegates on the Final Draft
For example this year at WMUN I represented Tunisia at DISEC, which was one of the biggest committee (240 delegates - students), our topic was Narcoterrorism and after discussions we handled 22 Working papers, 3 Draft Resolutions and finally we got amended Draft accepted by almost 90% of delegates.
The final Draft had a lot of interesting ideas, that could help fight against drug trafficking and terrorism! One day we may be in that position! To change the world!
