AMEE 出國心得
At first when I heard about AMEE conference, my
first thought was what it has to do with medical students. The medical
education conference seems to be so far reach from the medical student. It
seems that they are so irrelevant to us. But once I attend the conference I
knew I was complete wrong about it. It is essential for medical student to participate
in the conference. Not only can we learn so much about the current trend in
medical education, the new methods of teaching, other countries medical educational
system, we can also provide student perspective on the educational issues. The
educators, doctors, and researchers were all keen on listening to the student’s
ideas to help improve their lesson plans or ways of teaching. Thus, I believe that
AMEE conference is valuable opportunity for student to attend.
AMEE, also known as the Association of Medical the
Association for Medical Education in Europe, is a worldwide organization with
members in 90 countries on five continents. Members include teachers,
educators, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers, deans,
assessors, students and trainees in medicine and the healthcare professions.
AMEE promotes international excellence in
education in the healthcare professions across the continuum of undergraduate,
postgraduate and continuing education. AMEE, working with other organizations,
supports teachers and institutions in their current educational activities and
in the development of new approaches to curriculum planning, teaching and
learning methods, assessment techniques and educational management, in response
to advances in medicine, changes in healthcare delivery and patient demands and
new educational thinking and techniques.
AMEE was founded in 1972 in Copenhagen, to foster
communication among medical educators and to help promote national associations
for medical education throughout Europe. AMEE is the European regional
association of the World Federation for Medical Education and a member of the
WFME Executive Council. Several European national medical education
associations are corporate members of AMEE. Over the past decade AMEE has
developed steadily both in size and in the sphere of its activities and is now
a worldwide association with members and contacts in over 90 countries. And
every year, AMEE will hold an annual conference in a European city for people
to share and exchange education ideas.
This year the AMEE conference in 2014 was held in
Milan, Italy from August 30 to September 3. There were at least 3500 participants
from around the world to come together to discuss the current topic in medical
education. As a student, it was a really valuable opportunity to meet medical
educators from around the world and learn new ideas about medical education.
Furthermore, at this conference, there were more than fifty participants from
Taiwan. So it was a really interesting event to meet Taiwanese educators who
were keys in the development of Taiwanese medical curriculum.
Besides meeting people at the conference, I have
also learned a lot about ways of teaching in medical education, such as team
based learning or problem based learning. During the conference, I attended a
workshop on how to implement team based learning into a lecture to help improve
the learning outcome. I thought it was really interesting because this is what
we have done with Medical English at KMU. We also took a lecture based course
and transform it into team based learning/ task based learning/ problem based learning
courses. And we are actually not far flung from the things that educators in
other parts of world were doing and were concern about.
Overall, I think AMEE conference was a great
opportunity for students to be involved with their education. I think every
student should try to attend. And if I have the chance again, I will definitely
