報告內容:
一、參加會議經過
The 12th Asian Conference on Analytical Sciences, or
Asianalysis XII, was held at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan by the Japan
Society for Analytical Chemistry (JSAC). At least 250 scientists, academicians,
corporate employees, and graduate students from around the world attended the
three-day conference to present their research in various fields of analytical
chemistry, ranging from electrochemistry and nanomaterial sciences to mass
spectrometry in a conference held once every two years. Although the conference
venue was relatively small, approximately 120 poster and 140 oral presentations
were hosted after a careful selection process, with plenary lectures from
academicians such as Prof. Hian-Kee Lee, Prof. Kate Grudpan, and Prof. Norio
Teramae. A banquet for attendees was held on Wednesday, during which a boat
tour around Hakata Bay concluded with dinner at a restaurant.
二、與會心得
This conference at Asianalysis was where I gave an oral
presentation on a new research topic, which was different from those I gave at
the ASMS and AOMSC conferences. My presentation, entitled “Determination of Trace Metals in Aqueous Solutions Via Detection
of Metal-Chelating Agent Complexes Using Electrospray Laser Desorption
Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry (ELDI-MS/MS)”, was held during the mass
spectrometry sections of the conference; I was one of two Taiwanese speakers in
a section otherwise dominated by Japanese speakers from Kyushu University. Other
than mass spectrometry, oral presentations and posters covered many different
scientific fields, which included nanomaterials, chromatography, chemical
synthesis, spectroscopy, and biomarkers. Presenters mainly hailed from China,
Korea, and Japan, but there were some from Israel, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan,
and Malaysia. Many presentations were interesting because they were from
different fields of analytical science, yet dealt with similar issues such as
environmental regulation, food safety, and clinical diagnosis. Although I also
considered myself an analytical chemist, I realized there were many aspects of
the field I did not understand; in my path to become a better researcher I need
to learn more about different scientific technologies and methods in analytical
chemistry.

The
Asianalysis conference is relatively small compared to the ASMS and AOMSC
conferences that I attended in the past. However, the conference makes up for
its small size by including various fields of analytical science, where
attendees can learn about different fields from the poster and oral
presentations. In short, one can broaden their understanding about different
fields of research and the methodologies involved, in order to gain a more
holistic understanding of science, which may have potential benefits in helping
those interested in starting research projects in new fields.

五、其 他
I would like to thank Kaohsiung
Medical University for any financial assistance, as well as my advisor Prof.
Yeou-Lih Huang for his support. I would also like to thank Chu-Nian Cheng from
National Sun-Yat Sen University, with whom we collaborated for this
presentation and its related research work, for his help in the experiments
presented at the conference.
